Other Ways of Remembering
I looked closely at senses, because if we couldn’t see, hear, smell, touch, and taste how would we have any memory. Think back to a memory you have, and think to yourself why did you just remember that. Ever smell something and it reminds you of someone or something. We know what food we like because we REMEMBER the taste of that particular dish.
Moving on i found some interesting facts on our senses and memory. The most strongest sense in relation to memory is the sense of smell. This is because olfactory receptors for smell stimulate impulses to the directly to the brain. Smell has been proved to be more long lasting in relation to memory as opposed to sight because smell is long term and has long lasting impressions, this is why smell links to memory.
In addition to this i found that women recall smells more than men:
Researching Memory
In regards to my memory artefact i have to understand the basis of memory fully before i carry on deciding how i would like to show my work. I need to start thinking what it is i am actually going to produce, then later decide on how i will integrate some of the memory techniques I’ve noticed and liked in other media forms.
Here is a diagram i found to let me understand out long term memory which may give me answers as to why we do have the ability to remember things.

Reality
Memory is something that is real, many films and programmes grasp this reality and clearly portray it in a way where there is an evident effect. In my opinion any film on memory of of interest to anyone, viewers, feel a sense of belonging can relate that memory experience to themselves.
There is evidence that memory is real because we all have memory of something of some-kind, however in films, books and other media forms, these memories can me manipulate for entertainment value thus leading it slightly far fetched.
I believe memory is an ability thus every-ones ability to remember is different to someone else’s. Memory has become a game, think of card games pairs, the player has to remember the card they just picked up. Also a modern game is ‘Brain-Trainer’ on the Nintendo DS where based on your mathematical level, reading ability and how fast you can do all tasks can tell you how old your brain is. Thus is memory linked to the brain most people say yes however there are stories which oppose this. Having a good memory could be the result of how much knowledge someone has. I tested this out by playing a memory game on a BBC website where it tests visual imagery memory, numerical memory and auditoral memory. A section asked questions on my age and health making me address the question does this have anything to with my memory?
Try the memory game: http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/surveys/memory/
Stephen Wiltshire is a prime example for putting this notion of having more knowledge means better memory to shame. He is a significant person who was diagnosed with autism and could read, write or speak until the age of 5 however had the ability to draw large city’s from memory.
This video shows the intensity of the memory of Stephen Wiltshire discovered on Channel 5′s show ‘Extrodinary People’.
‘The Bourne Identity’
This is another film that plays on human memory. It makes a close connection to memory and the loss = amnesia however this loss lead to having no identity. Thus it is far in saying people need memory of oneself to have and identity. I agree because if you don’t remember nothing you can only believe what somebody tells you and does that person who tells you have the memory of who you are. The answers to this question is yes on the surface but not inner thoughts on oneself. It also conjures up the idea that do we have an identity anyway? or is it our surroundings and beliefs, discourses that make up our identity therefore, the fact Bourne doesn’t remember, he is open to any interpretation, thought, belief, about himself so is memory how we weigh up our identity.
In the film Bourne later finds out he is a hitman but doesn’t want to be a hitman anymore now that his memory of it all is wiped away. He perceive’s his actions of the job he entails as something he can’t do so tries to be free, except people are trying to now kill him, thus defends himself to be free.
Through focusing on this film it makes clear links to identity, plays strongly on the defects of memory which is amnesia. It shows the intense level of the anesia however does illustrate memory slowly coming back. This central point on memory again shows the importance of memory and how it can be used in many ways to create a story, inform and entertain an audience. I will take this film into account when looking at my memory artefact.
The Butterfly Effect Trailer
Here is the trailer for the film ‘The Butterfly Effect which clearly shows the way the main protagonist remembers and tries to control his memory. It also portrays the importance of memory and consequences around it and also how the movie cleverly depicts this, making it evident in a moment of remembering.
More on ‘The Butterfly Effect’
Referring closely to the theme memory in the film has been represented through the loss of memory then the remembrance stage by blackouts and recalling. These attributes are significant for me because i could use this when constructing my memory artefact. I have also looked at how they showed the protagonists going through these blackouts or moments of remembering. This is through special effects and a moment of blankness and stillness, similar to a flashback.
The Butterfly Effect Reflection
The film is about a boy who has serious blackouts later on in his life which controls his ability to live a normally. This was due to a traumatic childhood memory, which was a result of being adolescents, up to mischief (lighting a letter box on fire and killing women and her baby) and not preventing their horrific accident. . I feel the film shows a significant relation to morals and life; if you do something bad it will always come back and hit you harder (like karma). In addition to this the memory was a part of the boy no matter how hard he tried to change the situation. I feel it was cleaver how the film focused a lot on memory showing the remembrance through journals and recalling, however it showed the viewer these memories in every way the protagonist tried to change the given memory.
Intro
This memory topic has conjured up many ideas for me to explore and try to depict it through the means of video, audio or photography. I first started anaylsing the meaning of memory, what it is, how we percieve it and particular aspects, issues, stories around memory.
My research stemmed from being aware everyday bearing in mind the topic memory, anything i saw, read or watched; i would try to relate it to the topic and thus try constructing ideas or using elements of of particular research in my work. I have noticed there are a vast majority of films which focus closely to the term, two in particular are ‘The Butterfly Effect’ and ‘The Bourne Identity’. In addition to this the i found memory related articles in magazines, books-Autobiographies and even slight grasp of it in ‘The Simpsons’.
